Department of Industrial Engineering and Management (DIEM) is the leading department in its field in Finland. Industrial engineering and management combines technological, economic, and organizational knowledge in order to support value-creating processes and successful business. Research in the field covers, for example: the design and operation of modern production systems that deliver combinations of goods, services, and information; strategic management; technology-based entrepreneurship; collaborative processes and innovation in value networks as well a leadership in knowledge-intensive organizations. Internationally acknowledged research and close connections to diverse industries are the foundation of the teaching. The department also hosts a separate Business, Innovation, and Technology (BIT) research unit. BIT has over twenty years' experience of highly multidisciplinary research. BIT provides a unique platform for academic research that has outstanding societal impact.
The department is responsible for the degree programs and research in industrial engineering and management. Annually, the professors of the department supervise an average of 60 master’s degrees and 10 doctoral degrees. The department also provides Industrial Engineering and Management education for students in other departments of Aalto University.
